If I Receive a SSN, Can I Still Use My ITIN for Tax Purposes?
Once you receive employment authorization from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) you can apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). This nine-digit number enables the IRS to combine all your income records for tax reporting. Your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) will no longer be valid or needed because your SSN replaces it and now enables you to file taxes and receive credits and refunds. If you are not eligible for a SSN and you earn income in the U.S., however, an ITIN is necessary and a W7 tax form must be submitted to obtain it.
What Do I Need To Apply?
Proof of U.S. citizenship is not needed, but you must show the proper documents required for ITIN applications. A valid (unexpired) passport from the country of your residence will be requested and either an original passport or a certified copy will be accepted. If you do not have a valid passport, there are other documents that can be used for processing your ITIN application. You must show two documents which together can prove your identity and your foreign status.
Documents used to prove identity:
·USCIS-issued Photo ID
·Visa issued by the U.S. State Department
·Driver's license or ID card issued by any U.S. state
·National or U.S. military identification card
·Civil birth certificate
·Foreign driver's license or military ID card
·Proof of foreign voter's registration
Documents Proving Foreign Status:
·USCIS-issued Photo ID
·Visa issued by the U.S. State Department
·ID card issued by any U.S. state
·Civil birth certificate
·Foreign national or military ID card
·Proof of foreign voter's registration
